Strategies.
Meaningful ways to teach texts to lower-elementary students while incorporating SEL.

- Draw Upon the SEL Skill: Discuss with students what has been read and guide the discussion towards the SEL skill or theme. Then, ask the students to draw out an example of when they may be in a situation similar to the characters in the story. (I.e. When they can show empathy, thankfulness, or selflessness.) Help students connect it to their home or school lives, relating it to family members or friends in their classroom. Discuss what they drew afterword.
2. Reference a Story to Reinforce Teaching Practices: There are a number of teaching practices to continually encourage
SEL skills within a classroom. It may be helpful to students who forget the skills being encourage (i.e. respectfulness,
consideration, empathy) to reference a book you have read that hones in on the skill being forgotten. For example, if a
student is having a hard time sharing, referencing the characters from Mama Panya's Pancakes may help a student
remember the best way to handle their emotions.

3. Emotions Vocabulary: Use the books read with students to build an emotion vocabulary for students to reference when
trying to accurately describe how they are feeling.
